 Middlesbrough - The Riverside Stadium

Away Supporters are allocated seats in the South Stand, at one end of the Riverside Stadium. Up to 4,500 fans can be housed in this stand. The view is very good, as you would expect from a one of the more recent stadiums. The atmosphere can be a bit flat at the Riverside, so you'll have to make the noise yourself.

A trip to Middlesbrough is generally a trouble free one, and with Newcastle up the road, it can make for a good game to make a weekend of it.

 The Pub Guide

Dr Browns - 135 Corporation Road, Middlesbough, TS1 2RR
Tel: 01642 213 213

Dr Browns is a popular Away Friendly pub which is close to the Riverside Stadium, around a ten minute walk. The pub has a decent selection of beer and also shows the football on Sky Sports. There is a decent mix of home and away fans in this pub, although it does tend to get busy on matchdays, as you would expect.

The Bridge Inn, Bridge Street East, TS2 1NW
Tel: 01642 248785

Although not a designated away fans pub in Middlesbrough, this pub is a popular choice as it is just across the road from the train station. There is generally a heave police presence outside this pub and you can expect to be escorted to the ground, should you leave it late to head to the Riverside Stadium.

Lloyds Bar, 19 Newport Crescent, TS1 5UA
Tel: 01642 260650
Website: Wetherspoons Website

The Resolution is your local Wetherspoons fix. Open from 8am, so if you are on a lunchtime kick-off then head here as it's likely to be the only pub in town open. Serving all the normal cheap food and cheap beer, this pub welcomes away fans visiting the Riverside Stadium.

 Public Transport

Rail: The ground is walkable from Middlesbrough train station which is on Albert Road. Although there is a direct train service from the North West, fans travelling from other parts of the country, will most likely find themselves changing at Darlington, for Middlesbrough.

If you come out of the main entrance, turn left onto Zetland Road. Then left again into Albert Road andproceedunder the railway bridge. Turn immediately rightintoBridge Street East, going past the Bridge pub (not recommended for away fans) and then take the next right into Wynward Way. The stadium is down this road. If you come out of the rear station entrance, turn right ontoBridge Street East. Go straight past the Bridge pub andthen take thenext right into Wynward Way for the ground.

 Directions

From the north: Approaching Middlesbrough on the A19 cross over the River Tees and take A66 eastbound towards Middlesbrough town centre. Stay on A66 past the town centre (on your right) and follow signs to the stadium which you will see on your left.

From the south: Leave the A1(M) at junction 49, signposted to Teesside, and join the A168, which after approximately 11 miles will become the A19. Approximately 19 miles later take the A66 eastbound towards Middlesbrough town centre. Stay on A66 past the town centre (on your right) and follow signs to the stadium which you will see on your left.

From the west: Leave the A1(M) at Junction 57 onto the A66(M). Follow signs to Teesside on the A66. In approximately 18 miles you will pass Middlesbrough town centre (on your right) and follow signs to the stadium which you will see on your left.

 Parking

There is plenty of private secure parking as you approach the Riverside Stadium, following signs for away coaches. Alternatively, the Riverside Stadium is only around 1 mile away from the centre, so you could park and drink there before making your way to the stadium.

It is inaccurate to say per-sae across the board that the away allocation holds up to 4,500. Although this is the case at present, clearly on crowds of sub-25,000, the club can and do offer clubs (where necessary) an increase on the standard (and optimum allocation which the stadium was designed for) 3,500.

The club have given a number of clubs substantially more than the 3,500 figure over the past three seasons. Seasons which have coincided with a downturn in Boro’s palying fortunes and subsequent drop in attendances in the home areas. Barrow hold the record for away fans at the Riverside Stadium – 7,500 for an FA Cup 3rd Round tie in January 2009. Though since then, Newcastle United, Sunderland, Leeds United and to a lesser degree, Nottingham Forest have all enjoyed occupation of the majority of the South Stand up to 4,500 places. Something the club deem fit to entertain even though there is no specific concourse segregation to accommodate more than 3,500 fans in the South Stand.

On days when the away following totals hundreds (the is usually the case), the remaining South Stand concourse hosts the newly established Red Lion Pub. A Boro-branded café-lounge area where familys can enjoy cheaper food and drink in an area furnished with tables, televisions (often showing live football) and gaming stations to entertain younger fans. I think I’m correct in saying this is open only to home ticket holders on match-days and closes approximately 30 minutes before kick-off. This does not impact on the space need to house visiting fans on these given days.

Hope this information is of use. I would suggest in summary, that during better days (hopefully not too far away), the club will benefit from bigger attendances and will only be able to offer visiting clubs the standard 3,500 places the stadium was initially designed for.
