Newcastle United - St James' Park
I have never really understood the press and media's obsession with Newcastle United, ok they have alot of fans, and they have had some exceptional players over the years, but I think the press butter them up into something they are not, clubs are judged on success, which Newcastle have had very little of.
Anyway, on to the stadium. St James' Park is definately one of the more impressive away grounds to visit which can generate a special atmosphere.
Having said that, the view is somewhat err.... different. You can expect to be about 5 miles up in the top tier of the Sir John Hall stand.
There is plenty of room in the concourse and T.V's showing the match incase you want to nip down early for a half-time pint. 14 flights of stairs will take you to your seat, so if you are a fat git like me, then get some training in beforehand or it might take you a while to get to your seat!
Newcastle itself is on a par with Manchester, London, Blackpool etc for weekenders, with the nightlife one of the best in the country, the locals are friendly and is definately one that AwaySupporters would recommend to make a weekend of!
Rail: Newcastle Central Station is only about half a mile from St James Park. When you walk out of the station turn left onto Neville Street, head for the large 'Centre for Life' building which is on the left. Walk past this and at the second set of traffic lights you will see St james Boulevard, you can easily see St James Park at the top of the road.
Metro: You can get to St James Park using the metro, the stadium has it's own station which is directly outside the stadium. However it's only a short walk from the City Centre, so you will probably be better off walking it.
Directions to St James's Park, Newcastle
From the West:
Follow the A69 into Newcastle, cross the A1 roundabout and follow the A186 (West Road) signed City (West). After 2 miles you will see the General Hospital on your left. Immediately after the Hospital turn left signed Arthurs Hill/RVI. After 200 yards turn right at traffic lights down Arthurs Hill and continue straight down hill into Stanhope Street. Continue straight on for 0.5 miles and at roundabout at bottom of hill turn right into Barrack Road. Stadium is on the left. From the South:
From the A1(M), after Washington Services and Junction 65, the motorway divides - keep left following the signs for the A1. Take the centre or right hand lane and continue following signs for Newcastle and Airport. Pass the Angel of the North on the right and continue for a further 3 miles before turning off left on the A184 signed Gateshead/Newcastle (Centre).Continue for 1.5 miles then take the right hand lane signed A189 to Newcastle. This takes you over the Redheugh Bridge which leads into St. James' Boulevard. After 0.5 miles turn left at Gallowgate roundabout and stadium is on the right.
St James' Park is one of the very few stadiums that is situated in the heart of the City, as a result, you can walk easily to the stadium from any of the City Centre pubs.
The local Wetherspoons is called The Union Rooms, so if you are looking for a cheap pre-match drink with breakfast chucked in, then this is the place to go. For a more 'lads' pre-match drink, then how about Idols? This place will not only serve you beer... the ladies will strip as well... what better way for an alternative pre-match pint?
There is too many pubs to list, so please refer to Pubs Newcastle, which has a guide to over 175 pubs in Newcastle, so you should be able to find at least one pub that takes your fancy!
